Upcoming Summer Events

by jolenemac78 May 31, 2018 No Comments

Upcoming summer events in the Lafayette county Florida area is a little slim this year. We have the events at the library we wrote about last time, the upcoming Independence Day Celebration sponsored by the Lafayette Activities Group and that about sums it up so far. Besides expecting a real active hurricane season again this year there is not a lot going on this summer within the county.

Now that school is out and there are not a lot of crops to worry about for those who don’t have a job during the week it might be a good time to check out the two state parks in the county. Troy Springs State Park is a great place to do a little scuba diving, swimming, floating around on a raft, get in a little fishing and even have a picnic with your friends and family. Check out the website before you go to make sure that the cold springs are not browned out. The state doesn’t allow swimmers in the springs area if the river has intruded into the area. Don’t foregt to pay your park fee at the entrance and you will need cash to put in the envelop. These fees help keep the parks maintained and open. So, please don’t forget them. It is only $6 a car load so bring your friends and split the coast.

Lafayette Blue Springs State Park is another great place to swim, fish, put in a boat on the river, rent one of the cabins ($100/per night) which you have to reserve online ahead of time or do a little primitive camping in the camping area next to the river. Getting into the park is only $6 per car load and camping is like $5 a night per person which you might want to call the park to reserve a spot. Again, check on the state parks website to make sure that the springs are not browned out before your go. If the Suwannee is flooding you might not be able to camp either. The camping area is generally for those canoeing or kayaking down the river but you can park and hike over to the camping area anyway and set up. The park host or ranger will be by sometime to collect your camping fees.

Of course, if you want a chance to get a free pass to either of these parks and are over 18 you can volunteer with the park for the summer. If you have a self-contained camper you can even live in the park for the summer and work in the park. That way you get access to the park after hours and can earn a free year’s pass for every state park after only 500 hours of service. Think about it and if you can contact the park’s Manager for more information.

Have a great summer. Till next time. Be safe and stay cool.
