We thought we would begin this new year with a review of the Lafayette County Florida Government Offices. Who they are, what they do, how to contact them and what services you can get accomplished online, if any. Now, Lafayette County Florida is a relatively small county within the state with about 8,800 people in it’s 500 square mile area per the 2010 Census information website. Of course, like bigger counties, it does have several different departments to take care of the people’s needs and to fund the county itself.
Among those is the Board of County Commissioners which makes the laws and hears citizen concerns in regards to these ordinances that have been passed, ask for new ordinances and petitions for getting exceptions to these ordinances. They are also in charge of the Zoning and Building Departments. If you have any questions regarding these matters you will have to call their offices or go to one of the bi-monthly meetings.

The Lafayette County Board of County Commissioners meets regularly on the second Monday of each month at 9:00 am and the fourth Monday at 5:30 pm. All meetings are held on the second floor of the Court House Building in the County Commissioners Room #206. There is no listed email address for anyone connected to this office.
The Clerk of the Court’s office maintains the Commission’s meeting minutes and post them online as well as the upcoming agenda on their website. Sadly, the Commission Meetings Minute’s transcripts are not kept as up-to-date as they should be. The last one posted is from the first meeting in July 2017. They do have the transcripts online since 2007. It’s a great way to find out what’s been happening in the county, the county budget, what has been approved and what has been rejected in the past.
Most of the counties and cities in Florida post their municipal codes online with Municode Library Florida, however, Lafayette County does not. Nor have we found any alternative place that they are posted. Since this type of information is supposed to be made available to the public it would be nice to have it online and updated as needed. I guess you would have to go down to the courthouse to view a copy of these codes as the local library doesn’t have one available according to their online catalog.

The Property Appraiser does not determine the amount of your taxes. The various taxing authorities set the annual tax rate to meet their budget. Lafayette County Taxing Authorities include the County Commissioners, School Board, Water Management District, and the City Council (if the property is inside City Limits). Once the tax rate is set it is applied to your property value which then produces tax amount.
Other responsibilities of the Property Appraiser include the administration of the many property tax exemptions, keeping ownership records current, and maintaining aerial photographs including computerized mapping of the county.
