Avoid Misinformation and Have Fun While Self-Isolating

by jolenemac78 March 20, 2020 No Comments

During this wacky time, we hope everyone is doing what they can to keep themselves safe. Help a neighbor if you can. Order stuff online to be delivered instead of going out to the store. If our local businesses are still open and operating maybe they can schedule “Senior Only” shopping times, curbside pickups and even arrange deliveries. With the gas prices going down try to make sure all your vehicles are topped off. For those farmers out there thanks for all you do. Be patient with one another is the main thing at this time.

Our local library has eBooks you can check out online. I use them all the time as it saves me a trip into town and I don’t have to worry about losing the book or not getting it back there on time. If you want updated information look to our Emergency Management area of the Sheriff’s Office website and the Florida Department of Health.

Now is a great time to sign-up for the county’s emergency alert system

If you haven’t had a chance to read the featured article on this county’s local writer you should check it out and share it with your family and friends. Heck, go crazy and buy a couple of her eBooks from Amazon.

Jolene is still waiting to hear from the rest of the Lafayette County Florida published writers to create their featured article. Yes, it’s going to take at least 10 months to get everyone done but please remember it is first come, first serve so when she reaches 300 that’s it for the year.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW ABOUT PIONEER DAY – please contact the Lafayette Activities Group on Facebook directly. The event is always held on the second Saturday of October of every year. The application and fees associated with vendors are determined by that group only.

FUN FOR KIDS

Keeping the kids occupied during this down-time can be somewhat difficult. If you have a large fenced in the yard then they can get out every day and play with each other. Heck, you can join in on the fun. There is nothing wrong with a water balloon fight, acting out your favorite play or even have a dance and exercise session every morning.

NEED HELP WITH HOMESCHOOLING

Besides the Virtual School from the county website, there are some other tools out there that you can check out for a little variety for you and your kids.

Scholastics is Offering Free Access to their Classroom

Yahoo has created a listing of Virtual Museum Tours for Kids

Yahoo also has gathered a listing of Walt Disney World Virtual Rides

Crayola Has a Home Learning Section on their Site

Science Friday has Free online Learning STEM
https://www.sciencefriday.com/educate/

And who doesn’t just love Cool Math Stuff

Of course, these all assume that you have a computer and internet service at home that you and your kids can use. If you have a smartphone with unlimited data you can always tether your laptop/desktop wirelessly. Check with your service provider to see if they are running in specials for the next couple of weeks to help out if you don’t. Sadly, we can’t use hotspots like the library for now. Help each other out here. Any suggestions?
