Now that you have taken one of the social media courses at the Lafayette Library it is time to start a trend on Twitter and Facebook. We have created a couple of “hash tags” that we are using on our own Twitter posts and will start using them on the Facebook page as well. If you haven’t had a chance to take one yet we hope you will check our Calendar Page to see when the next one is being held. If you don’t see the one you would like to take please call Lafayette County Library [(386) 294-1021] and ask them if they could schedule one. These “Free” classes at the library require a certain level of attendance. Ask all you friends, family and other local business people to sign-up for the next class to guarantee that it will be held!
All you have to do to start a trend is to type one of these at the beginning of all your posts and when people want to know more about Lafayette County Florida and what is happening in the area Twitter will help them find all of us quickly. If you would like to add a couple to the list just use our “Contact” form and let us know and we will share them on our website. Social Media accounts are still a great way to get people to visit your website, let people know what is happening in our area, or a way for visitors to share their experiences while visiting the area. The more people who use these hash tags the more followers and, hopefully, the more visitors you will get.
It only takes a few minutes each day to compose a 140 word post, post a link to your website articles, mention a sale, upload a picture or just show people something fun happening in our area. Most Social Media consultants will tell you it is better to post at least once a day and at about the same time of day regularly so that your followers will begin to count on you posting and in the process you may begin to get more people to follow you. Yes, some people post every hour on the hour but you don’t really have to do that to get people to follow you. It is the content that people care about.
For the Facebook users with their own Facebook PAGE and not their personal Facebook account there is a little bit of difference. You must create a personal account with Facebook which you can then make private and only available to your friends and family. A Facebook PAGE is one created to be accessible to the public. More and More businesses, charities, national, state and local parks and groups are creating a Facebook Page to post upcoming events, share photos of past events, announce upcoming sales, get customer feedback, and just to share with people around the world what’s going on. These pages will only be as good as those who post to them. So long as you try to post something every day or at least once a week you will slowly begin to get “Likes” and people following your page. The more “Likes” you get and the more consistent you are with posting to that page the more exposure you will get. More exposure can lead to more business! Again, it is about “Good” content. You can’t just post links to your sales page you have to share with your readers other things as well.

Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your personal Timeline or Page. This helps people find posts about topics they’re interested in. To make a hashtag, type in the # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase (written as one word) and add it to your post. For example:
I walked up so many hills today! #SanFrancisco
When you click a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of posts that include that hashtag. You’ll also see some related hashtags at the top. You can search for a hashtag using the search bar at the top of any page.
Note that you’ll only see posts that were shared with you. Learn more about who can see your posts when you use hashtags. The hashtag feature isn’t available to everyone right now.
On the flip side of these things is that you have to spend 30 minutes to an hour each day following other people with similar interest, re-tweeting relevant tweets, “hearting” other relevant tweets, and “liking” other Facebook pages. You don’t necessarily have to follow the people who follow you nor do you have to “like” other Facebook pages that like you but it is considered a courtesy. The people you follow on tweeter and the pages you like on Facebook will show in your news feed. This will give you a place to start each day to check and see if there are some relevant tweets you can “heart” or re-tweet and Facebook posts you can like and/or even share on your page.
All of this takes time and patience to learn and grow. It will be worth it in the end as you get more people visiting your website, coming into your business and/or attending your events. I know it is hard to do and we haven’t been the best at doing this either. But we hope over the next 6 months to get better at it.
